Commentary feature discusses the resignation of the UK Permanent Representative to the European Union Sir Ivan Rogers in January 2017, and subsequently the appointment of Sir Tim Barrow as his replacement, in the context of the United Kingdom preparing its strategy for leaving the European Union and its plans for a new relationship with the EU. Subsequently, United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May made clear in a tv interview on the 8 January 2017 that she would set out proposals for Brexit 'in coming weeks'. She hinted that the UK might leave the EU's single market. However the Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond said on the 9 January 2017 'We haven't made any decision on which structures would best support our aspirations ... Whether it is being in or out of the customs union, in or out of the single market' ... . |
