Brexit required the UK to have a new agriculture policy. The UK Government and devolved legislatures had set out proposals for supporting farmers whilst enhancing the environment during 2018.

This Commons Library briefing had been updated ahead of publication of an Agriculture Bill* in order to set out the policy context.

* The UK Government in the guise of Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, launched the Agriculture Bill on the 12 September 2018.
