A new Interparliamentary Forum on Brexit, bringing together parliamentarians from Westminster, Edinburgh and Cardiff, along with officials from Belfast, was established in 2017 and held its first meeting at the House of Lords on 12 October 2017. Background The House of Lords European Union Committee, in its July 2017 report on Brexit: devolution, recommended that the structures for interparliamentary dialogue within the United Kingdom should be strengthened, to support more effective scrutiny of the Government’s handling of Brexit. Up to October 2018 the Forum had met five times: • 12 October 2017 at the House of Lords The next meeting was planned for 14 January 2019. At its October 2018 there was a clear view expressed by the attendees that the Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC) mechanism was not fit for purpose. |
