Date: 17/01/02 Leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities on Cyprus yesterday (16 January) agreed to hold regular talks on settling their differences before the island joins the EU. The UN's special envoy Alvara de Soto hailed the move as 'an encouraging start'. He said President Giafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot chief Rauf Denktas 'engaged immediately on the substance' and will meet three times a week. A study by the London School of Economics this week warned that accession of a divided Cyprus would risk a crisis and damage the security of the eastern Mediterranean. |
