The EU and Brazil held their second Summit on 22nd December in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). The EU was represented by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the President of the Commission José Manuel Durao Barroso. The event was hosted by Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The Summit was the occasion for the three leaders to exchange their views on global and regional issues of common interest. The international financial and economic crisis was a central topic. Other important topics included climate change, energy, multilateralism and the political situation in the South Cone. The principal deliverable of the Summit was a Joint Action Plan that sets out the political priorities and actions of the EU-Brazil Strategic Partnership.
