During the UK's Presidency of the European Union, July-December 2005, Prime Minister Tony Blair has pledged he will seek to simplify EU common fisheries policy and to rely more on fishermen's own estimation of fish stocks.

Separately, the UK's Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs released a report on 28 June 2005, 'Securing the Benefits', developed by all four fisheries administrations in the UK. The report sets out a range of measures to secure a sustainable future for the UK fishing industry.
