EUObserver reports comments made in an interview in The Times by former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair on the 9 June 2011 that the European Union must have an elected leader to give it the 'clear leadership' to successfully spar with rising powers such as China in the future.

He also urged European Union members to move closer together and form common policies on areas such as energy, defence, immigration and crime.

Mr Blair said 'The rationale for Europe now is power, not peace'.
