Lord Simon, the former UK European Trade Minister, has warned UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, that government disagreement over the single currency is leaving Britain unprepared for the launch of the new euro notes and coins. Lord Simon went on to say that UK businesses would be at a competitive disadvantage from 1 January 2001 because the government is not advising them of the consequences of being unprepared to accept the euro.
