US foreign policy under Donald Trump was hard to fathom. The US president hoped to sign in 2018 a denuclearisation agreement with North Korea even as he tore up America’s participation in the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

How should the EU react? In this Commentary feature the author suggested that Europe’s most useful role would be to push for steady American policies. It was also to convince Iran that a compromise on missiles was in its own interest. It should also liaise with regional Asian partners and ensure that negotiations with North Korea do not only focus on missiles and ensure that it started de-nuclearising as well.
