Summary:Communication adopted by the European Commission on 9 December 2021, setting out the approach and measures to be introduced by the European Union (EU) on platform work. Further information:Digital labour platforms are seen as an efficiently solution to match supply and demand for labour, thus creating opportunities for clients, workers and self-employed people. However, digital transformation also comes with challenges, and the advent of digitalisation has been affect labour markets in ways which question the European model of social market economy. It is understood that forms of work organisation do not automatically translate into quality jobs. This text calls on Member States, social partners and all relevant actors to put forward measures aimed at improving working conditions in platform work. Its aim is to harness the benefits of the digital transformation and protect the European social market economy. The European Commission wants the EU to lead by example and contribute to future global standards for high-quality platform work. Platforms operate in a cross-border way and warrant a cross-border regulatory approach. The Communication was adopted by the European Commission on 9 December 2021, alongside a draft Directive aimed at improving working conditions in platform work. |
