Date: 20/11/03 SILVIO Berlusconi's blessing for Russian tactics in Chechnya and Moldova was openly contradicted by a member of his government yesterday (19 November). Addressing MEPs in Strasbourg, Deputy Foreign Minister Roberto Antonione described the abuse of human rights in Chechnya as "worrying" and called on Russia to withdraw its military hardware from Moldova's Transdniestria region by the end of this year - as agreed by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Following the EU-Russiasummit in Rome on 6 November, the Italian wrongly claimed the government of Moldova does not want 1,500 Russian troops removed from its territory. The European Parliament is expected to adopt a resolution today condemning Berlusconi for not heeding agreed EU policy. |
