Article reports that Silvio Berlusconi left hospital on the 17 December 2009 after four days of treatment for injuries he received in an attack by a mentally disturbed man that has traumatised both Italy and its controversial prime minister. Aides to Mr Berlusconi say he has been deeply shocked by the incident, which has added an ugly dimension to Italy’s already poisonous political atmosphere. His supporters charged that the opposition and the media had created a “climate of hate” in which the attack could take place, while some die-hard opponents said the prime minister himself was responsible for the context of the attack. A wave of sympathy for him after the attack may change the political dynamic in Italy, where he has been facing a wave of political and legal problems related to his media empire and to alleged links to the Mafia, which he strongly denies. |
