His supporters charged that the opposition and the media had created a “climate of hate” in which the attack could take place, while some die-hard opponents said the prime minister himself was responsible for the context of the attack. A wave of sympathy for him after the attack may change the political dynamic in Italy, where he has been facing a wave of political and legal problems related to his media empire and to alleged links to the Mafia, which he strongly denies. |
