The German Government said on 3 April 2006 that the country's previous government, headed by Gerhard Schröder, had not committed any wrongdoing in granting Russian energy company Gazprom a €1bn credit guarantee in October 2005. However, Chancellor Angela Merkel refused to comment on her predecessor's decision to take up an appointment with Gazprom.
