Berlin attacked over stance on deficit

Leading business associations and opposition politicians in Germany attacked the government on 12 February 2002 over its success in avoiding an early warning from the European Commission over its growing budget deficit. Economists also doubt the likelihood that Germany would be able to achieve a balanced budget by 2004, a commitment made by the German Finance Minister on 12 February 2002.
