Summary: On 18 December 2018, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel offered his resignation to the King of Belgium. The Prime Minister admitted defeat after opposition parties submitted a vote of no confidence, due the political crisis triggered by differences over immigration. His resignation was accepted by the Belgian King on 21 December 2018. The Prime Minster and his government will keep a caretaker position until the elections for the Belgian Chamber of Representatives on 26 May 2019. Further information: The Prime Minister chose to continue with a minority government when the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), quit the coalition over a dispute on signing the United Nations Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. Two days before the Prime Minister offered his resignation, protest erupted in Brussels against the Global Compact for Migration. |
