Date: 29/02/1996 British Labour Euro MP Alan Donnelly's new assistant was asked to book a table at the prestigious Orangerie restaurant in Strasbourg so that the MEP could entertain bon viveur and Industry Commissioner Martin Bangemann. But the booking went instead to the Orangerie bowling alley. Understandably, Donnelly was not best pleased, but it all worked out for the best - Bangemann reportedly had a great time knocking back a few beers, munching on Wüstchen and listening to the clatter of falling nine-pins. And it probably saved the European Parliament budget a few ecus into the bargain. |
