Balls sets out likely leader’s ‘hard-headed Europeanism’

Ed Balls, Economic Secretary to the Treasury in the United Kingdom, and a close ally of Gordon Brown, publishes a pamphlet, May 2007 (The EU and regulating the city, CER, 2007), which hints at Gordon Brown's likely approach to Europe when he becomes Prime Minister. The Brown government's approach towards the European Union must be governed by a 'hard-headed pro-Europeanism', one that recognises the need to co-operate with the EU but also defends the UK's national interest.
