Richardson's promotion, incidentally, is part of the latest round of appointments to Commission directorships, agreed before they went off to put their feet up on Schuman Day. Hans-Adolf Neumann will take up his new post as anti-dumping director in DGIa (external relations) on 1 June, Karl-Johan Lönroth is set to become employment and labour market director in DGV (social affairs) and Dominique Ristori becomes energy policy director in DGXVII (energy).

Meanwhile, changes in DGXI (environment) have helped rebalance the sexes within the Commission, with three women now amongst its five directors.

Constanza Adinolfi, a former head of unit in DGIX (personnel and administration) has been promoted to director for environmental instruments and her colleague Ruth Frommer-Ringer takes over responsibility for industry and the environment.

The changes are being seen as a hopeful sign that things may at last be moving in the equality stakes.

At the end of 1995, just 14&percent; of A grades in the Commission were women.
