Hungary's parliament formally endorsed the politically non-aligned Gordon Bajnai as the country's new Prime Minister on the 14 April 2009. He replaced Ferenc Gyurcsany, who announced his decision to resign in March 2009, saying he considered himself a hindrance to the need for further economic reforms.

Hungary is suffering its deepest economic crisis in nearly 20 years and has been one of the countries in Eastern Europe worst hit by the financial and economic crisis. The new prime minister plans to immediately introduce austerity measures and economic reforms and demand sacrifices from many Hungarians, including cuts to pensions and public sector pay.
