Date: 04/04/1996 Two prime ministers made their first appearances at Turin, while a third took his final bows. Greek Premier Costas Simitis and Sweden's Göran Persson seemed perfectly happy in the midst of beef banter and IGC hysteria. It was a sadder occasion for Spain's Felipe Gonzalez. After losing last month's election, he received the inevitable warm thanks for his contribution to the EU - mainly from two allies of the Popular Party that defeated him, Jacques Chirac and Helmut Kohl. But Gonzalez is no quitter. He gamely acknowledged the tributes and made it clear this was just au revoir and not goodbye. “I'll be back,” he vowed. |
