Analysis feature looks at relations between the United Kingdom and its European partners (in particular France and Germany) over the UK's attitudes to the European Union and the eurozone debt crisis. There is a poor public perception across Europe of how Britain has performed in the eurozone crisis. There is a growing belief in Germany and France that Britain has been playing an unhelpful – even malign – role. The writer suggests that there is confusion over UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s stance on the future of the European Union as a whole. On the one hand, Mr Cameron says he would accept deeper fiscal and economic integration of the 17 member eurozone in order to stabilise the single currency. Yet, he also makes demands for powers to be repatriated from Brussels to Britain. As one European diplomat put it: 'What is it that Cameron wants? We just don’t know'. On the 18 November 2011 David Cameron met German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin for bilateral talks on European issues. |
