Summary:

Staff Working Document published by the European Commission on 6 February 2020, reporting on the state of play of the commitments of Georgia under the Association Agreement signed with the European Union (EU).

Further information:

This report sets out the state of play on Georgia’s implementation of its commitments under the EU-Georgia Association Agreement (AA) since the last EU-Georgia Association Council meeting and ahead of the next meeting. It serves as the basis for a review of the Association Agenda.

The document shows that Georgia remained committed to the obligations and undertakings of the Association Agreement. Alignment to the EU acquis, as well as to European standards, particularly in the area of human rights, has effectively continued. However, challenges remained in the areas of electoral reform, political dialogue and reform of the judiciary. With the EU as Georgia's largest trade partner, the country has further aligned its legislation with EU standards and norms to facilitate the trade of food and non-food products. Additional structural reforms were seen as required to make Georgia's economy less vulnerable to external developments and to enhance the investment climate.
