An association agreement has been floated as one possible option for the future relationship between the EU and UK. Both sides say they want a deep, comprehensive trade agreement and to cooperate on issues of mutual interest such as defence and security. Establishing this requires some legal framework. In the past, the EU has used association agreements to provide a legal framework for this level of cooperation.
