Book abstract:

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) was initiated in 1996 as a means of increasing economic links between Europeans and the East Asians, and is seen by many as an opportunity to create a counter balance to the dominating influence of the US in world affairs. This book explains what ASEM is and what it can be used for.

The work is organised over six chapters wrapped by an introduction and a conclusion. Chapter one provides the background to the birth of ASEM and the part that Singapore and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) played as midwives to the birth. The early developmental stages are covered in chapter two. The next three chapters examine ASEM in the framework of summit diplomacy, as an instrument for regional integration and as an institution for regime creation. Chapter six presents an appraisal of ASEM as it is today, and examines the criticisms and challenges it faces and the external factors which might influence its further development.

The work will interest students, scholars, and researchers engaged in international affairs, EU studies, and world trade issues.

Yeo Lay Hwee is Senior Research Fellow at the Singapore Institute of International Affairs.
