Ashton lays blueprint for EU diplomats

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice-President Catherine Ashton presented her draft proposals on the organisation and functioning of the European External Action Service (EEAS) on the 25 March 2010. The proposals come following extensive consultations with the European Commission, European Union Member States and the European Parliament.

The proposals lay out a legal framework for the EU’s nascent diplomatic service, defining its role and its relationship to the rest of the bloc’s institutions.
