Ascension of populist parties but relative stability of political balance in the European elections

Nearly 170 million voters from 28 EU countries went to ballot between 22nd and 25th May 2014 and elected the 751 MEPs to the Parliament in Strasbourg. The first surprise of this election was the turnout was maintained and even increased slightly in comparison with the previous European election between 4th and 7th June 2009. Moreover the ascension of the populist parties was significant in some Member States but weaker and almost non-existent in others. However there is stability in the political balance between the various groups in Parliament.
