Background and further information:

Members of the Parliament called for the European Union's arms export control to be upgraded by setting up a supervisory body and sanctioning Member States not complyinf with minimum requirements.

MEPs criticised member states for violating EU’s common arms export control system and taking conflicting decisions on arms exports, though weapons to be exported are essentially alike and reach similar destinations and end-users.

The European Parliament's plenary session adopted on 13 September 2017 a report on arms exports and the implementation of Common Position 2008/944/CFSP.
