Summary: Reports, analyses and information on the appointment of Lithuania's Virginijus Sinkevičius as European Commissioner for Environment and Oceans, in the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen. Further information: Virginijus Sinkevicius is a former minister of economy and innovation in Lithuania. Upon his appointment by national authorities, it was highlighted he was on course to become the youngest Commissioner ever to take office. He was formally announced on 9 September by the President of the European Commission. His portfolio was known on the following day, set to take on the role as the European Commissioner for Environment and Oceans. The relevant committees of the European Parliament held a hearing with Mr Sinkevičius on 3 October, in order to assess his capabilities to lead the portfolio. Media sources later reported he had been approved as a suitable candidate for the position. On 13 November, the designation of Mr Sinkevičius' portfolio was changed to 'Environment, Oceans and Fisheries'. |
