Summary: Reports, analyses and information on the appointment of Romania's European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, in the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen. Further information: Rovana Plumb - a former minister in different cabinets - was originally nominated by the country's government as the Romanian candidate for the College of Commissioners. Ms Plumb was formally announced on 9 September by the President-elect of the European Commission as Romania's appointment, and her portfolio was known on the next day, set to take up the portfolio featuring matters relating to transport. However, on 26 September the Parliament's legal affairs committee announced it would not support her nomination due to concerns relating to her financial statements. The nomination of a replacement candidate was affected by an political crisis in Romania. The government first proposed Dan Nica to replace Ms Plumb, but was shortly after removed from office by a vote of no-confidence in Parliament on 10 October. A caretaker administration named Victor Negrescu on 29 October, but the European Commission later stated they would not be able to accept the designated candidate following the understanding that the caretaker Prime Minister was not in a position to make such nomination. Following the formation of a minority government on 4 November, Siegfried Mureșan and Adina-Ioana Vălean were nominated. The latter was later accepted by Ms von der Leyen as the Romanian candidate. The relevant committees of the European Parliament held a hearing with Ms Valean on 14 November, in order to assess her capabilities to lead the portfolio. Media sources later reported that she had been approved as a suitable candidate. |
