Summary: Reports, analyses and information on the appointment of Bulgaria's Mariya Gabriel as European Commissioner for Innovation and Youth, in the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen. Further information: Mariya Gabriel was one of the set of Commissioners to carry on in the office from the previous European Commission. Ms Gabriel was formally announced on 9 September 2019 by the President of the European Commission. Her portfolio was known on the following day, set to take on the role as the European Commissioner for Innovation and Youth. The relevant committees of the European Parliament held a hearing with Ms Gabriel on 30 September, in order to assess her capabilities to lead such a portfolio. Ms Gabriel was eventually endorsed by the European Parliament as a suitable candidate for the position. The portfolio includes the management of the Erasmus student exchange and Horizon Europe programmes. |
