Summary: Reports, analyses and information on the appointment of Greece's Margaritis Schinas as Vice-President for Protecting the European Way of Life, in the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen. Further information: Margaritis Schinas worked as the European Commission's chief spokesperson before being appointed by the Greek government in July 2019 as the country's candidate for von der Leyen's College of Commissioners. Mr Schinas was formally announced on 9 September 2019 by the President of the European Commission. His portfolio was known on the following day, set to take on the role as Commission's Vice President for 'Protecting our European Way of Life'. The job title caused controversy amid accusations of appeasement to the far-right narrative. The relevant committees of the European Parliament held a hearing with Mr Schinas on 3 October in order to assess his capabilities to lead the portfolio. Even though members of Parliament kept their calls for a change in the job title, media sources later reported that he had been approved as a suitable candidate. On 13 November, it was announced that the designation of Mr Schinas' portfolio has changed to 'Promoting the European Way of Life'. |
