In a speech before the 'Euro 50 Group Roundtable' Conference in Washington on 30 November 2001, Alan Greenspan, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, highlighted the impact on the euro of competitive flaws in the European economy. Mr Greenspan told the conference that the euro's persistent weakness against the US dollar reflected the widespread belief that America's economic performance will remain superior to western Europe's in the years ahead.
