Summary: Reports and analyses of the in-depth investigation conducted by the European Commission over restrictions placed by Google through AdSense on the ability of certain third party websites to display search advertisements from Google's competitors. Further information: The European Commission sent on 14 July 2016 a Statement of Objections to Google setting out its preliminary views that the company had abused its dominant position by artificially restricting the possibility of third party websites to display search advertisements from Google's competitors. The decision to launch a separate in-depth investigation followed an initial phase which began as part of a broader Google Search investigation. The Commission argued that the practices had enabled Google to protect its dominant position in online search advertising, preventing existing and potentital competitors from entering and growing in this area. On 20 March 2019, the Commission announced the decision to fine Google €1.49 billion for breaching EU antitrust rules (Article 102 TFEU). It was concluded that the company has abuse its market dominance by imposing a number of restrictive clauses in contracts with third-party websites which prevented Google's rivals from placing their search adverts on these websites. The decision was addressed to Google LLC (previously Google Inc.) and Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company. |
