Summary: Mayor of Gdańsk , Paweł Adamowicz, was stabbed during an event of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WÓSP) on Sunday 14 January 2019. Adamowicz was rushed to hospital and received surgery, but died of his injuries Monday afternoon. The attack shocked Poland. Politicians across the the political spectrum expressed their condemnation of the attack. On Monday evening thousands of people across Poland took to the streets to remember Adamowicz and to protest against violence. Further information: Adamowicz served as mayor since 1998, being re-elected in 2002 and in 2018 as an independent. He was a progressive leader who was critical of the governing Law and Justice party (PiS) and supported LGBT rights and tolerance for minorities. His attacker blamed the mayor's former party Civic Platform (PO) for his imprisonment. The attack happened in a time of political tensions in Poland. Where even the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity has become a politicised topic. The charity has been a prominent target for pro-government attacks. |
