Article reports that the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development unveiled December 2008 the first in a series of loans designed to lessen the impact of the downturn on businesses in central and eastern Europe.

In a response to the severe impact of the global economic slowdown on the economies of central and eastern Europe, the EBRD is stepping up its support for small and medium sized enterprises in Romania via a €100 million loan to Banca Transilvania, one of the country’s leading SME banks.

The EBRD plans a substantial increase in investments in 2009 in response to the severe impact of the global economic crisis on central and eastern Europe.
