Annual Report: European Union Settlement Scheme

Summary:

Following the United Kingdom's (UK) exit from the European Union (EU) - also known as Brexit - the UK Government gave European citizens who were living in Wales before 31 December 2020 a deadline to apply to stay here by 30 June 2021. This applied to citizens from EU Member States, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland but not Irish citizens, who are exempt under separate arrangements. The number of citizens from these countries living in the UK is unknown, meaning nobody knows how many applications there should be.

The EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) is the UK Government’s programme to which European citizens must apply in order to stay in the UK after Brexit. The Senedd's Equality and Social Justice Committee has considered quarterly monitoring reports on the EUSS since its establishment in June 2021. This second annual report presents EUSS statistics relating to Wales up to 31 December 2023 and provides an update on the latest correspondence between the Committee and the Welsh Government.
