Summary: The European Ombudsman published in August 2016 the annual report covering the activities of her office for the year 2015. Further information: The year 2015 was an eventful one for the European Ombudsman institution, as the Ombudsman built on her strategy for greater impact, visibility, and relevance. It also saw the launch of reform proposals for the European Network of Ombudsmen (ENO), such as conducting parallel inquiries at the national and European level. The alleged lack of transparency continued to be the top issue brought to the attention of the European Ombudsman, accounting for 22.4% of complaints in 2015. Such cases concern, for example, the institutions’ refusal to grant access to documents or information. The strategic inquiry launched by the Ombudsman into transparency around the proposed EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is one such example. The Commission, in March 2015, responded to the Ombudsman’s proposals on how to make TTIP negotiations more transparent by promising to proactively publish more TTIP documents. |
