Summary: The European Ombudsman published in July 2013 the annual report covering the activities of his office for the year 2012. Further information: Most inquiries that the Ombudsman opened in 2012 concerned the European Commission (245 inquiries or 53% of the total). Since the Commission is the main EU institution that makes decisions having a direct impact on citizens, it is logical that it should be the principal object of citizens’ complaints. The European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO), whose decisions impact citizens who want to work in the EU administration, saw a doubling of inquires (17%) addressed to it compared to last year. Other inquiries discussed the lack of transparency (21.5%), including refusal to release documents or information. Inquiries also contained problems with the execution of EU contracts or calls for tender, conflicts of interest, unfairness, delays, and discrimination. In addition to the Annual Report, the European Ombudsman also published a concise version of the report named 'Overview'. The year 2012 also signals the last year of office of P. Nikiforos Diamandouros as European Ombudsman. |
