THE youngest Commissioner-designate answered MEPs questions with cold efficiency but exuded little passion for her prospective portfolio of employment and social affairs.

Diamantopoulou left few hostages to fortune in her replies, but expressed a readiness to tread on member states toes in the social policy field.

The Greek Christian Democrat said there was an “urgent necessity” to reform the Union's bloated social security systems and called for a “greater convergence” of policy to ensure “greater evenness across the EU”.

On pensions, where the Union has traditionally had little influence, she suggested that policies could be coordinated across the Union in the same way employment policies are now.
