The European Parliament's plenary session endorsed on 15 March 2017 a draft law tightening up official food inspections, from farm to fork. These rules aim to improve food traceability, combat fraud and restore consumer trust in the integrity of the food chain. The proposed legislation also provides a comprehensive, integrated and more effective control system in the areas of food and feed safety rules, veterinary and plant health requirements, organic productions and protected geographical indication rules.

The proposal was put forward by the European Commission in May 2013. An informal agreement between the Parliament and the Council of the European Union was reached in June 2016. The latter formally endorsed the compromise text in December.
