Further information: The aim is to update the EU-Chile Association Agreement to bring its political and cooperation ambitions and trade provisions into line with the EU's modern agreements. The Council's decision was formally made at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council. The European Parliament had already approved a set of recommendations regarding these negotiations. The plenary vote was held on 14 September 2017. The first round of negotiations was scheduled to take place on 16 November and a second one in early 2018. Background information: The Association Agreement between Chile and the European Union was signed in 2002 and provisionally applied since February 2003 - including the trade provisions. The rest of the agreement was implemented in 2005. It includes a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) pillar that has led to a significant increase in trade in goods and services between the EU and Chile. The Council of the European Union approved on 13 November 2017 a mandate for the EU to conduct negotiations with Chile for a modernised Association Agreement (AA). On 22 January, the Council decided to publish the mandate given to the European Commission. |
