Summary: Joint Communication published by the European Commission and the High-Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on 25 March 2020, setting out their strategy and priorities when it comes to Human Rights and Democracy. Further information: Global leadership on human rights and democracy was identified as a strategic interest both in the Strategic Agenda for 2019-2024 and the European Commission's Political Guidelines. The purpose of this Communication is to put forward a new EU Action Plan for Human Rights and Democracy. It sets out ambitions and priorities for a period of 5 years in this field of external relations and aims to contribute to achieving a stronger role for the European Union across the world. It is the only instrument of its kind aimed at promoting a values-based agenda on the world stage. Alongside this Communication, a Joint Proposal for a Recommendation to the Council of the European Union that it issues a recommendation to the European Council to take a Decision that would adopt the strategic objectives guiding this Action Plan. The Council of the European Union adopted on 18 November 2020 a set of conclusions concerning this Action Plan. |
