Abstract:

This work arises from research commissioned by the European Commission in 2002 preparatory to formulation of a proposal for a Directive on access to justice in environmental matters.

The book is organised in four chapters. The first of these is by way of introduction, then chapter two goes on to explore access to justice in eight selected Member Sates - Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United Kingdom - and presents empirical data to support the research. Chapter three examines that data and offers a comparison of trends outlined in the different Member State reports. Chapter four considers the conclusions reached in chapter three and the merits of the proposal for a Directive on the access to justice in environmental matters.

The book will interest scholars and students engaged in Environmental Law, European Studies, and European Integration.
