Article discusses the practice whereby the two main Political Groups in the European Parliament unofficially agree on who will be the President of the European Parliament. So, for example, under an agreement struck between the centre-right EPP Group and the Socialist Group (PES) in 2009, Socialist leader Martin Schulz is tipped to take over from parliamentary president Jerzy Buzek (EPP) half-way through the current five-year legislative period in early 2012. The smaller Political Groups dislike this practice and some plot to see the practice disrupted. |
