A Turkish threat?

European governments trying to convince Ankara that Turkey is the EU's friend were done no favours by the launch of a European Parliament-backed Internet site this week.

The cringeworthy 'Captain Euro' website tells the story of a chiselled superhero and his blond sidekick 'Europa' as they battle for the cause of European unity.

If this were the only flaw in the scenario, the cartoon capers would rank alongside other tacky, but ultimately harmless propaganda pumped out by the EU. However, the real problem with Captain Euro is the fact that the 'baddies', led by the incorrigible hook-nosed Dr D Vider, look like a gang of dark-skinned and bearded Turks.

According to the flagship strip, the arch-fiend intends to divide Europe and create his own empire (surely not Ottoman).
