...formally presented a comprehensive strategy for stamping out crimes which cost the EU and national governments at least 3.5 billion ecu in lost revenue every year. After a year-long inquiry, the committee tabled 38 specific proposals to close the loopholes exploited by fraudsters. They called for more stringent checks, closer judicial and customs cooperation between national authorities and the creation of a centralised customs intelligence office.
