Author Marc Pierini argued that Turkey's military offensive in Syria in January 2018 and its domestic agenda were leading to a cul-de-sac in its relations with the European Union.

However, in the ECFR Commentary (18.01.18), Asli Aydıntaşbaş argued that diplomatic overtures during the late autumn of 2017 suggested that Turkey seemed finally to be settling for a second-tier 'privileged partnership' with Europe, as opposed to the prospects of ever achieving full membership of the European Union.
