Date: 29/10/1998 Journalists visiting the Austrian resort of Klagenfurt last weekend couldn't help but notice the town seemed to have its mind on things other than the meeting of EU leaders in neighbouring Pörtschach. Everywhere they looked were flags emblazoned with '2006', boldly proclaiming Klagenfurt's bid to host the Winter Olympics. Publicity expounding the joys of closer European union was less in evidence. Perhaps the EU's prime ministers and presidents might consider turning up to future get-togethers in skin-tight Lycra if they want to cause more of a stir. |
