Summary:Joint Communication published by the European Commission and the High-Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on 7 June 2023, setting out a new agenda for the relations between the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Further information:The relations between the EU and LAC are longstanding, based on a large network of agreements. However, in a fast-changing global context, the EU-LAC relationship has been deemed in need of renewal. This Joint Communication sets out the EU's proposed approach to develop an agenda for a new era of cooperation between the two sides. It makes the case for a renewed partnership and proposes a set of priorities and actions in key areas. These actions include the strengthening of the rules-based international system, the defence of multilateralism, and the promotion of peace, security, democracy, the rule of law and human rights. They also comprise the diversification of trade and investment relations, include the reduction of excessive dependencies. The agenda also includes items relating a fair green and digital transition. The Communication was adopted by the European Commission on 7 June 2023. |
