Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was doing neither himself nor his country any favours in April 2017 in refusing to meet the German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel, after he had decided to talk to two local NGOs, Breaking the Silence and B’Tselem.

The former had been documenting violations by the Israeli Defence Forces in the occupied Palestinian territories. The latter focused on human rights violations there.
